The ClearSat-15-III, Clearwater's third-generation WOCE-SVP drifter, has been totally redesigned to reduce weight, complexity, and cost. The smaller surface float and redesigned tether and stress reliefs allow the drogue to be reduced in size. Its new ClearSat 4.0 controller runs at 3 volts for lower power consumption and features enhanced power management.

WOCE drifters are standard in surface mixed-layer velocity measurement and for autonomous ocean sensor platforms. They are designed to have a high drag-area ratio, which field studies and simulations have shown to minimize slip (the velocity of the drifter relative to the layer being tracked). The ClearSat-15-III features a drogue centered at 15 meters compared to the surface float and tether.

Each ClearSat-15-III is fitted with a sea surface temperature probe as standard equipment. Optional instrumentation can sense atmospheric pressure, air temperature, salinity, PAR, upwelling light, and GPS locations. Drogue depth centering can also be varied as an option.
